Here are
some easy-to-make kits that would also make useful Christmas Gifts
Laundry
Washing Kit:
If you were
in a situation where there was a wide-spread power outage or disaster you would
need an alternative way to wash your clothes. It is important for personal
hygiene as well as morale. There are
several different ways to create an inexpensive clothes washer. One way is to buy the mobile washer that is
sold at Emergency Essentials (www.beprepared.com). Another agitator can be a NEW, inexpensive
and very basic toilet plunger. Use it to
plunge the clothes in the water to agitate.
Some people I have seen on www.youtube.com such as Desertsun02, have taken the plunger
and a small drill bit and drilled a few holes in the top of the plunger. You will also need the following:
1 new 5
gallon bucket. Drill a hole in the
center of the lid large enough for the plunger handle to fit through. You can store the plunger and other supplies
inside the bucket when not in use and put the lid on. All in one kit!
Some laundry
soap. Some say that a liquid one will
work better, but any soap is better than nothing. I would also include some
hydrogen Peroxide, works great on blood stains.
Clothes line
and clothes pins. Yes, you can still
find these at big box stores.
A clothes
pin bag that can hang from the clothes line would be a nice addition to the
kit.
You may want
to invest in a 2nd bucket for the rinse water. They are cheap and easy to find.
Another
slightly different design for a bucket-based washing machine can be found at
www.foodstoragemoms.com/wash-clothes
it was posted on 7 Sept. 2014.
Homemade
Laundry Soap: I found this on www.youtube.com.
It was posted by One Good Thing by Jillee. The video is called “Make a year’s worth of
laundry soap for $30”. Some people use
Felsnaptha bar soap and some call for Zote.
There are many recipes and videos on making this basic laundry soap. This
photo is actually from www.homesteadsurvival.com I have
included a picture below of the products used.
These are available in the laundry soap aisle but you may have to really
look for them for a minute.
Product
Highlight of the Month: Ceramic Gravity Fed Water Filter
System by Saratoga Jacks
Clean water
is THE MOST important thing we need to survive.
This filter system is very affordable and is portable and easy to
obtain. We are planning on doing a group
buy on these again possibly as early as January. If you are interested in these please keep
reading. These are sold by Saratoga
Jacks, a Utah company. To see this on
their website, please go to http://www.saratogajacks.com/blog/post/if-you-dont-have-a-good-filter-in-an-emergency-you-are-the-filter.htm
This is a
gravity-fed water filter that is made with colloidal silver impregnated ceramic
technology. The interior has activated carbon to improve water flavor. One filter will last up to 8 months with
daily use. It can filter up to 17 gallons of water a day. It would be a good
idea to buy an extra filter to keep on hand.
There is not room to put all of the information here so please see their
website. In our group buy that we plan
on doing, you should be able to choose between buying just a filter, a filter
and spigot or an entire kit. A complete
kit would also include 2 buckets and 2 gamma lids as per the photo that I will
include.
